The
Children of Huang shi (also the bitter sea and Escape from Huang shi) is a 2008
Chinese movie directed by Roger Spottiswoode, written by Jane Hawksley and
James MacManus. The story is of true incidents that happened in China at in
1930’s. The 64 children who faced those situations, few had shared their
experience of those days at the end of the movie.
A
British Journalist George Hogg enters into China as a red cross medicine
supplier, to collect the photographs of happenings in China. The first day he
stepped in Nanjing, comes through group of Chinese brought to a place and was
shot included ladies and children, he photographed it. The night he got caught
with Japanese military.
Next
morning, looking through his Photos, ordered to kill him. Brought to a place
and soldier took his sword and aimed at him and at the last moment , he was
saved by the Chinese Nationalist Han-sheng Chen (Jack). Informs Hogg to leave
the place and tell the world what’s happening. On the way finds his Hogg’s
friend getting killed from Japanese, could not stop it and then they turned
towards them chased and shot.
Next
morning, Hogg got medical treatment from Pearson, a doctor she leaves after a
while. Jack informs Hogg that he came to China to teach Engineering, now
teaching how to blow things up, informs him to move northside of Huang Shi and
Hogg reaches there. Finds a school where 60 Children were there with lack of
food. Next day, early morning amongst Children under Liu-shi kai’s command few
started to hit Hogg, last moment Pearson came and stopped it. Having dinner
together informed about Liu-shi kai, his father was killed and his mother and
sister was raped and killed in front of his eyes, so he’s little rude to
others.
Then
Hogg helps her in convince the boys that the treatment of lice by flea powder
does not hurt and other children started to have the treatment. Pearson leaves
the place informing him to take care of children, he refuses it but later he
stays their itself. Repairs the electricity, installed basket ball play stand,
etc. With Ching moved to town met Mrs. Wang and made a Business deal of Cereals
and seeds for Vegetables. Days passing smoothly.
Hogg
comes through a group of village people moving, speaks with them at the same
moment Japan planes dropped bombs and the 4 brothers who lost their parents
were brought to the Orphanage by him. Japanese Military officers who come there
informs to leave the place, if we get order we’ll capture this place for
military use. Hogg worried if they call him a nationalist, it’ll be a problem
for children and decided to leave the place. Yulin one amongst
those 64 children hanged himself, the reason was, when his parents said to
leave the place they died, something happens awful.
Hogg
finds Jack passing gun to Ching and warns him not to continue it further. The
night settled in a plac, two Japanese soldiers came to check there, were taken
under control and Hogg ordered not to shoot them. Next day morning, while
leaving Liu-shi kai shot them under Jacks Guidence. Hogg informs Jack to leave
them when they reach Silk road. On the way in Silk road, a Japanese military
group checking towards them, as of misunderstanding happened Liu-Shi-Kai left
his life. A kite was tied as of their culture. Jack spoked to Hogg his final
words and left the place.
Everyone
moved through out Liu Pan Shang Mountain, over 700 miles in a plan to reach
Shandan. In between got support from Magistrate of Lanzhou Chang Shangyi the
chief of pole, got help of 4 trucks in which they moved to Shandan and a place
to live was also made ready by them. They reached the place, children
themselves made everything ready which Hogg thought them.
They
were in a stage that they were able to look after them by themselves. But Hogg
dies of Tetanus and was buried next to the place, they were living.
The
Children from Huang shi, A story of a true hero who thought children to lead
life by themselves.
